Overview: For the 90th consecutive year, Augusta National Golf Club plays host to the most wondrous spectacle in golf, The Masters. The Masters is one of the more straightforward tournaments to handicap given its constant host location. With that said, anything can happen when a green jacket is on the line.
Scottie Scheffler has to be my pick to win outright. The World #1 enters with the longest active made cut streak on tour at 70 straight tournaments, just two shy from reaching the top five longest streaks in PGA Tour history. Further, Scheffler has obviously won this tournament twice in the last four years, and his worst finish in five career appearances was a T19. All six of Scheffler’s starts so far this season have resulted in top-25 finishes (including one win) and I don’t see anything that would deter him from a third green jacket in five years.
Collin Morikawa is a true boom or bust pick this week. On paper, he looks primed for a top-10 run, recording three in five career Masters appearances as well as having a wide lead atop the PGA’s strokes gained approaching the green statistic. The only problem is a back injury which forced Morikawa to withdraw from The Players Championship about a month ago. Morikawa has not played in a formal tournament since then, although he did play nine practice holes with Scheffler and Cameron Young on Monday. Accuracy has been extremely important over the last few Masters, and while Morikawa may not have the same power with the injury, he can easily make up for it with his accuracy on approach to the green.
Patrick Reed is yet another under-the-radar player who has shown amazing consistency. Since 2017, Reed has made seven straight Masters cuts and has amassed four top-10 finishes. Reed also won the tournament in 2018, giving him an additional edge in the experience category. Reed also boasts a 1.57 strokes gained o approach average, which is second in the DP World Tour behind Shane Lowry, who has also had success at Augusta. Experience and strokes gained are the two biggest factors I look at, and Reed fits the build for both.
If I had to pick a long shot to win, it would certainly be Adam Scott. Scott, just like the aforementioned stars, has the perfect balance of successful experience and strong stats. A rare missed cut last year ended a streak of 14 straight Masters with a made cut for Scott, including a win at the 2013 edition. Scott also ranks among the world’s best in strokes gained on approach, ranking T3 in the metric behind Morikawa and Brooks Koepka.
